Stop Saying Velvet is Outdated
Velvet used to be a synonym for "old-school or outdated". Grandma's curtain fabrics must have unconsciously left an impression in our minds. Today, velvet has been completely re-transformed into a popular fabric in the fashion industry. The rich colors, the softness, and gorgeous gloss, makes every kind of velvet item a candy to the eyes.

As early as 2000 years ago, velvet was used as an exclusive fabric on clothing made for European royalty and aristocrats. It was one of the most luxurious fabrics available then. Queen Elizabeth I once wore a velvet costume, and Princess Diana had been famously noticed for wearing velvet garments to attend many events. In the 1939 film, "Gone with the Wind" the famous emerald green velvet dress worn by Scarlett O'Hara became an instant classic.
In the Medieval and Renaissance times, many velvets were made of pure silk. As time went on, most of velvet made today has been blended with fabric. Velvet today is nowhere near as rare as before. However, with its elegant luster, soft, smooth texture, hanging down on one's body is an unmatched sensation unlike any other fabrics.
Many designers seem to be in the habit of drawing design inspired from vintage velvet. In the past few years, fashion has seen a huge spate of retro trends, velvet is slowly making its way back to public's wardrobe. The velvet tracksuit from Juicy Couture was popularized in 2008. Several years later, velvet became one of the hottest fabrics. The collaboration of Balmain x H&M showcased 70 items last year, and 80% were made of velvet. Other than this, Altuzarra, Sonia Rykiel, Balmain, Dolce&Gabbana, Christopher Kane all released their version of velvet garments in 2015.
This year, the frequency of velvet has appeared in the fashion industry like never before. Valentino ’s runway was almost completely dominated by velvet items. Monse's peach-pink velvet clothes had a naive feeling that did not sacrifice any sexiness and Lanvin's runway show was just like a velvet party. Luisa Beccaria’s models in velvet dresses appeared as if they were taking straight out of oil paintings; looking absolutely retro and elegant. Victoria Beckham SS 2017 series debuted in New York, it was also full of elements of velvet. Velvet will continue to be popular. Moreover, velvet is not entirely just suitable clothes, but works wondrously for handbags, accessories, and especially boots. If you are not ready to wear velvet items in a large section of your body, do put into consider implementing a small velvet accessory which can highlight your look as well.

Fashion is so transient that the forgotten what previously looked at as tacky will once again get picked up again through a period of time. Items such as velvet is a fine example of a fabric that has been re-conditioned to be deemed fashionable-albeit in a retro way.
